Oh So Cheap...NOT!!! Frontier and Spirit Airlines

Hey Explorers! I know when it comes to travel, flights can take up a lot of your expenses and we

are always looking for that cheaper route! So some of us have resorted to Frontier Airlines or Spirit Airlines as their rates are usually advertised as quite low. But I'm here today to tell you it isn't all what it is cracked up to be! Let me show you how much you will save compared to Delta Airlines and what to expect from them!

But before we get started, sign up for my mailing list and get a free packing list to help you get ready for your next trip! You can sign up by visiting my survey page here!

For today's flight comparison, we are looking for a round trip flight from Atlanta, GA to Orlando, FL from July 20, 2018 through July 22, 2018 (based on rates as of May 30, 2018). Oh and for a short weekend, I'm only going to carry-on my luggage!

Here is what you will spend with Delta Airlines and what you will get for the price (prices are in USD):

  • $286.40 round trip non-stop flight.

  • Main cabin seat is included at no additional cost and you pick your seat from the options available.

  • You may incur baggage fees if you are not a SkyMiles credit card holder for $25. But we don't have to worry about this as we are carrying on!

  • Carry-on luggage and personal items are free.

  • Non-refundable ticket but changeable with a fee.

  • You receive normal customer service.

  • Check-in for your flight in person or online for no additional cost.

  • Below you will see a screen shot of this price quote from Delta's mobile app:

Here is what you will spend with Spirit Airlines and what you will get for the price (prices are quoted in USD):

  • $196.40 round trip non-stop flight.

  • Main cabin seat was $10 per seat or $20 round trip.

  • A carry-on bag will cost $74 round trip.

  • Non-refundable ticket but changeable (with a fee) but if you pay an additional $45, you can do so. But I'm not going to add this option.

  • I have heard of numerous horror stories with them from friends such as leaving early when half your flight isn’t there! And just terrible customer service!

  • Check-in for your flight in person for a fee of $10 or online for no additional cost.

  • Below you will see a screen shot of this price quote from Spirit’s website:

As you can see Spirit ends up being $90 less than Delta! But most people get caught up as they advertise their base fees such as for this flight of $71.62! Be sure to understand what all you are paying for before you commit! And be careful, as you could pay even more than what I was quoted!

P.S. They do have a program where you can sign up for about $60 per year to receive a small discount each time you book a flight. It isn't worth it if you don't fly with them much as the discount is only about $18 for this flight but it could vary based on route.

Oh and be sure to customize your flight options instead of bundling. Bundling wouldn't have saved much at all!

Now here is what you will spend with Frontier Airlines and what you will get with the price (prices are in USD):

  • $210.40 round trip non-stop flight.

  • Main cabin seat was $12 per seat or $24 round trip. You could pay $0 if you want a middle seat at the back of the plane.

  • A carry-on bag will cost $70 round trip.

  • Non-refundable ticket but changeable (with a fee).

  • The seats do not recline!

  • They have decent customer service.

  • Below you will see a screen shot of this test from Frontier's website:

P.S. Some Frontier routes are limited as they may not fly that route every day or they may not service a destination in certain seasons. They also have sales from time to time with $20 flights....so try to jump on that!

As you can see Spirit has the cheapest option, Delta is the most expensive and Frontier is in between. I must say, if I had to choose, I would choose Frontier or Delta because honestly you get what you pay for. And from personal experience, I haven't had any major issues with either of those airlines. But for each, understand your expectations and lower them based on the price. Always understand what is included in the price before purchasing and what you may have to pay before flying! And most importantly, wait or look for flight deals. I have spelled out some of my details in my blog Travel & Your Wallet.

I hope this post has let you see some of the differences from a major airline to a discount airline. Have you ever flown Spirit or Frontier? If so, describe your experience below!
