Hey Explorers! Today, we will continue our French cruise adventure, starting with a morning bus trip to Macon France for a walking tour, followed by an afternoon visit to the stunning Chateau de Cormatin. Continue reading to learn more about these beautiful French locations!

Macon: History and Rainy Day Charm
Our morning began with a bus ride to Macon from the cruise ship due to heavy rains. This meant our planned docking was cancelled due to high water levels, but the tours continued by bus. Despite the weather, we explored the charming streets, admiring the unique architecture, including a wooden house dating back to the late Middle Ages. The rain did put a damper on some of the sightseeing, but we made the best of it!
Upon arrival in Macon, our tour guide shared fascinating historical tidbits, like the story of Hotel Soufflot, a former charity house where mothers could anonymously leave unwanted infants. We also saw the impressive St. Peter's Church and the Cathedral of Macon, showcasing the city's rich architectural heritage.
Lunch was a delightful experience at Les Copains D'abord, a quaint restaurant recommended by our guide. I enjoyed a tasty veggie burger before heading back to the bus for our next adventure.
Chateau de Cormatin: A Glimpse of Grandeur
Our afternoon excursion took us to the magnificent Chateau de Cormatin. Built in the 17th century to display the power and prestige of the Marquises d'Huxelles, the chateau boasts a wide moat and extensive gardens. Sadly, the relentless rain prevented us from exploring the gardens, but we were fortunate enough to tour the interior of the castle.
Inside, we discovered a treasure trove of artwork and historical artifacts. The Antechamber, also known as the cabinet of curiosities, was particularly fascinating, filled with unusual objects like seashell candles. Our guide shared stories of the chateau and its inhabitants, bringing its history to life.

Evening on the Cruise Ship
Back on board, despite the boat remaining docked, we enjoyed the cruise ship amenities. I relaxed with a cocktail, a complimentary offering each evening, and then enjoyed a delicious dinner. A special thank you was given to the wonderful cruise staff for their hospitality throughout the week. The evening culminated with a performance by a talented French jazz singer in the lounge.
Visiting Macon and Chateau de Cormatin while in France is definitely a must for those who want to go off the beaten path and see beautiful architecture. You may see and learn more about this day along the river cruise by clicking play below!
